High School Journalism Night At The Boston Breakers!

High school journalists from Acton-Boxborough and Newton South learned about the real world of reporting on professional women’s sports before taking in the Houston Dash/Boston Breakers game at MASPA’s first ever high school journalism night with the Breakers on Aug. 31.

Stephanie Yang, co-manager at StarsandStripesFC.com, and Meg Linehan, senior editor at Excelle Sports, spoke with students pitchside for about 45 minutes prior to kickoff at Jordan Field on Harvard’s Allston campus. The pair spoke about a broad range of topics, including gender in sports, the importance of networking for reporters, and even search engine optimization (SEO).

The group then had midfield seats for the game which featured the return of US women’s national team captain Carli Lloyd to her club team after the Olympics. (Unfortunately for the Breakers, it also featured two Kealia Ohai first-half goals en route to a fairly one-sided 3-1 Dash victory.)

Some students stuck around after the game to get autographs and photos with players.
