We’re excited to be able to offer two different Back-to-School adviser workshops this August, one for newspaper advisers and one for yearbook advisers, and a Write-off Contest for students. All will be at Newton South, and all cost only $10 for each adviser or student. Click on the links below to register:
Come Together — Newspaper Advisers’ Back-to-School Workshop
Newton South, Thursday, Aug. 23

Join a group of newspaper advisers from across the state to dig into the real problems we’re all facing. The workshop will have three sessions:
Session #1: “How do I handle this?”
A group of advisers will look at one adviser’s specific dilemma in depth, trying to give the person a new perspective on the issue, while at the same time getting insight into problems we all face as advisers.
Session #2: “I should know how to do this, but…”
Maybe you haven’t quite figured out Snapchat. Or the basics of using a DSLR camera. Or how you should be teaching kids to write photo captions. Get a quick intro into a discrete skill you want to know more about.
Session #3: “Is this any good?”
A group of advisers uses a concrete discussion protocol to look up close at real student work, asking questions like, “What about this works? What doesn’t?” “How do I help the kid improve and get better?”
The Yearbook Is Journalism– Yearbook Advisers’ Back-to-School Workshop

Session #1: “It Starts With Story”
From the theme to the ladder to design decisions on individual spreads, the driving force should be the story you’re trying to tell your readers. Hear how one veteran newspaper adviser has tried to learn that lesson as he’s moved into the yearbook world.
Session #2: Skill Session
Want a quick refresher on how to write an effective caption? To get a quick overview of Photoshop or the settings on a DLSR? A short session designed for yearbook advisers to learn the basics of a discrete skill you want to know more about.
Session #3: “Is this any good?”
A group of advisers uses a concrete discussion protocol to look up close at real student work, asking questions like, “What about this works? What doesn’t?” “How do I help the kid improve and get better?”
Learning by Doing — A Back-to-School Write-off Contest
A group of high school journalists will hear from a local newsmaker of some kind, and be able to interview him or her. Then everyone will write a story about what they heard. Then MASPA Executive Director Brian Baron and whatever other adults he can scare up will score your stories against a journalism rubric while the group watches a journalism movie and eats some pizza. Then we’ll handout some awards for the best stories, and you’ll all be better high school journalists.
